Maya Hayuk

Image

Maya Hayuk is enormously talented.  And she does some epically large pieces (murals) that drive me wild.  Full of colour, symmetry and vibrancy, she paints walls everywhere from Mexico, to the Bahamas, to Brooklyn with great flair.  I love her description of her work on her website: her works “recall views of outer space, traditional Ukranian crafts, airbrushed manicures and mandalas.” Featured in galleries, small spaces, and large spaces, her work is psychedelic and funky and I can’t look away!

Jane Denton Textile Art + Design

Image

Jane Denton is an artist from New Zealand who specializes in beautiful embroidered wool designs on canvas.  Originally a jewellery designer, she started creating her textile art when she was seeking to create art for her own home.  She couldn’t find anything beautiful that she wanted that was affordable, and a new artistic life was born! Her work stands out marvellously from any gallery wall, and is delicate, and tactile, and delicious looking.  Very clean and bold. Love love love!

Jessica Harrison Tattooed Ladies

My Grandma Morgan always had a collection of Royal Doulton figurines in her house.  At one time, they were all the rage! Not super interesting to me as a kid, as I probably was never allowed to touch them.  When she died, my mom kept a few to remember Grandma by, and as a lover of well-crafted things I started looking at them in my mom’s house.

I was reading one of my favourite blogs, The Jealous Curator, and saw a post she made about Scottish artist Jessica Harrison.  She has done several series of artwork in ceramic, including some more grotesque (and I mean this in the best way) figures that have been decapitated, hearts pulled out, boiled by acid and disemboweled.  They’re beautiful, but I am really liking her hand-painted figurines that are heavily tattooed ladies.  I know a lot of tattooed ladies in my life, and I think not only are they beautiful, but a nice way to represent a different kind of beauty that I see in my friends! I wish I could buy one, but I’m pretty sure they sell for around 1200 pounds. A girl can dream, though, can’t she?

Idlewild Co.

Image

Idlewild Co. is a boutique paper goods company based in Vero Beach, Florida (although originally started in Brooklyn, and originally called Rocket Inc.).  I first found out about the company under their old name, in a fantastic gem calendar in one of my favourite boutiques in Victoria, Violette.  Their work is graphic, colourful, clever, and beautiful.  I want to buy all of it, each and every bit.

The first set of pictures are of their current booth at the National Stationery Show, happening now, and were taken by the blogess at Oh So Beautiful Paper.  The other product pictures are from their site.

Zaria Forman

Zaria Forman does stunning work.  She does astounding things with soft pastels, paper, and her fingers alone.  Her works primarily represent some of the world’s remote landscapes, to which she travelled as a child with her photographer mother: Greenland, the Maldives, various arctic destinations.  Her work has graced the sets of House of Cards, as well as been featured as the backdrop for the classic ballet, Giselle.  Remember: she does this work with her FINGERS! I’m floored.

The Color Condition

The Color Condition is comprised of two fabulous ladies, Sunny and Marianne. Located in Dallas, TX, these girls create custom streamer displays out of table cloths, painters’ drop cloths and shower curtains. The girls were drawn to repetition, patternization and colours. I think this video captures their spirit perfectly.
